It’s no secret that I am a big fan of the Craft & Vision photography e-books. I think they are a fantastic bargain at $5. So when I saw that David DuChemin was authoring another e-book in the series I was excited. I’m a big fan of David and have and enjoy all his books including Within the Frame, Visionmongers and Vision and Voice. I understand he is in the process of writing yet another book which I am eagerly waiting for.
A Deeper Frame: Creating Deeper Photographs & More Engaging Experiences is all about how to create images that express your vision through the appearance of 3rd dimensionality. Think about what a photograph does to a scene. It compresses it into 2 dimensions. Often times our images can appear flat. So how do we bring back that expansive and deep look? That is what this e-book is all about; techniques to create the perception or illusion of depth.
The book starts by talking about why you might want to add that depth and the rules surrounding three dimensional images. Included are some fantastic images that illustrate the rule or point that is being talked about. A lot that is discussed is how to draw the viewer’s eye into the image.
Topics discussed in this e-book are:
- The frame cubed
- Depth through optics – how the lens we choose affects perspective and depth
- Focus – how a change in focus can affect depth
- Color – even color or the temperature of the color can affect how we perceive depth
- Light – how contrast and the change between light and dark affect depth
- Capturing emotions – what good is depth if there is nothing to explore?
It’s a short e-book at 23 pages but the information contained inside offers up perspectives on creating more compelling and interesting images that draw the viewer in. I really enjoyed this book. It was an easy read and really gave me some things to think about when composing my images. I always feel that I am constantly learning and practicing my craft and these e-books have been really useful in giving me new things to think about and incorporate into my photography.
