Fresh Strawberries in Gelatin – Project 365: Day 147

Fresh Strawberries in GelatinWith the heat of summer finally here it’s sometimes necessary to find ways to cool down.  There is nothing better than to find interesting foods to lower the temperature inside your body.

This dish is made of fresh strawberries chilled in gelatin.  The gelatin is made from agar powder which is actually a red algae and completely vegetarian unlike true gelatin which is made from calf’s feet.

To make this photo I placed the clear glass bowl with the strawberries and gelatin on a hollow stand (it was actually the base of an ice shaver) and put a single flash below it.  I wanted to have the gelatin glowing which would help make the strawberries stand out.  In this particular shot I used a very shallow DOF (depth of field) which created some nice patterns in the background while the strawberries in the foreground are in focus.

When I look at this shot it’s almost like looking at burning embers or a lava flow, which is ironic because it’s such a cool and refreshing dish.  I really like how it turned out.

So what do you think?
