Every Monday I post a photo that is meant to inspire you, motivate you, cause you to pause and ponder, remind you of your dreams and hopefully entice you to act on whatever your goals may be. This Monday, July 16th I bring you one from a 2009 trip to 100 foot tall Sahalie Falls.  Sahalie Falls is located 68 miles east of Eugene along the McKenzie Highway (Hwy 126).

Every Monday I post a photo that is meant to inspire you, motivate you, cause you to pause and ponder, remind you of your dreams and hopefully entice you to act on whatever your goals may be. This Monday, July 2nd is an image I took years ago when I was shooting with a Pentax MeSuper and Velvia slide film.

Somewhere in Arizona

Unfortunately I don’t know where this image was taken.  I had been working as a wildlife biologist for the BLM in Coos Bay and since it was only a seasonal job I decided to spend my winter traveling the desert southwest.

So I packed up my Toyota 4X4 and headed out on the road.  I explored Zion National Park with some friends then headed south into Arizona making it as far as the border town of Lukeville and camped at Organ Pipe Cactus.  I also visited Death Valley, Joshua Tree and The Valley of Fire.

Every Monday I post a photo that is meant to inspire you, motivate you, cause you to pause and ponder, remind you of your dreams and hopefully entice you to act on whatever your goals may be. This Monday, June 25th is a sunrise I experienced in Nusa Dua Bali Indonesia way back in 2005.

Nusa Dua Bali Sunrise

Waking up to this every morning would not suck.

In 2005 we spent 2 months in Indonesia.  At one point we left our son with the grandparents and my wife and I took a 2 week trip to Bali.  On our first evening in Bali we stayed in Kuta and decided to walk down to the beach and watch the sunset.

My wife asked if I wanted to take my camera since the sunset was looking like it was going to be a good one.  But after a day of carrying the camera around I decided to leave it in the hotel thinking that there would always be another opportunity.

Up Close - A Guide to Macro & Close Up Photography

Craft & Vision has released their latest photography eBook by photographer and author Andrew S. Gibson and it’s all about macro and close up photography.  As usual it’s $5 unless you use the code CLOSE4 within the next 5 days (by June 24th) to get it for $4.  This is a book designed to take some of the mystery out of macro photography and show that it doesn’t take a big bankroll to get started.

When I heard this book was going to be released I was excited to get it because at the beginning of the year I purchased the Canon 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro lens as I wanted do a bit of macro photography as well as food photography.

As an aside, the Canon 100mm f/2.8L IS macro lens is a phenomenal lens.  I’ve used it for everything from portraits, detail work at weddings, product photography and of course macro images of flowers, insects, water drops.  Of course as you will learn in this book, you don’t need an expensive lens such as this to get started with macro photography.

A macro shot I took with the Canon 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro lens.

OK, back to the book review, Up Close by Andrew S. Gibson is all about the equipment and techniques of making great macro and close up images.  It’s filled with beautiful photos to illustrate the concepts and frankly had me wanting to get out and do more macro shooting.

Every Monday I post a photo that is meant to inspire you, motivate you, cause you to pause and ponder, remind you of your dreams and hopefully entice you to act on whatever your goals may be. This Monday, June 18th I present my boys.  While maybe not so inspirational for you, they mean the world to me.  And since we just celebrated Father’s Day yesterday I felt compelled to post a few images of them.

Quick Prom Photos

A couple of weekends ago I received a text message from my sister asking if I was available to shoot some photos of my nephew Brenten and his prom date Macy.  Of course I received the text a few hours before prom so I didn’t really have any time to plan out a shoot but of course I said yes to the shoot.  It’s family and shooting photos is what I do.

I quickly went through my usual mental checklist of items: batteries charged, memory cards formatted, select the right lenses to take.  I’ve lost count the number of times I’ve forgotten to charge batteries or throw some spare memory cards in the camera bag so now I always go through my checklist.

Since I was totally unprepared regarding the photos were going to be taken I decided to really cover my bases.  I packed my Canon 5D Mark II and Canon 7D camera bodies.  On the 5D Mark II used the Canon 24-105 f/4L IS lens and on the Canon 7D I was rocked the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 II IS.  I had also packed my Canon 580EXII speedlight along with my King Pixel flash triggers and a softbox.  We ended up shooting all outdoors and with the nice natural light I didn’t end up needing additional flash lighting.

Every Monday I post a photo that is meant to inspire you, motivate you, cause you to pause and ponder, remind you of your dreams and hopefully entice you to act on whatever your goals may be. This Monday, May 28th (the last Monday in May) is Memorial Day.  Memorial Day is a day to remember the men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.  I like to think of it as the day we remind ourselves that each of us has the capacity and the calling to act on countless daily opportunities to serve.
