Project 365: Day 10 – The Right Tool

So today I had to stretch a bit to come up with an idea for a photo (Day 10 and I’m already struggling for ideas?).  I ended up with this pipe wrench since I’ve been doing a bit of plumbing work recently.  The pipes in our house are a little goofy in that the kitchen sink, washing machine and garage utility tub all drain into the same pipe.  While this is not unusual I think someone put in a few too many twists and turns in the system as it seems to get clogged pretty easily.  When that happens the water backs up in the utility sink and if the washing machine is draining it overflows from it’s drain.

I thought I could easily use the pipe wrench to get the clean out valve open and snake the system out.  But after wrestling with this wrench in awkward positions I decided that I’m going to need a bigger wrench.  This one just isn’t the right tool for the job.

I started to think about things in my life that have been challenging, even things that I have failed at.  Maybe I just wasn’t using the right tool for the job.  Rather than giving up because things get tough, maybe we just need to find the right tool.  I don’t believe that there is anything we can’t do if we set our mind to it and are truly passionate about it.  If you really want to you can live your dreams.

Sure, I could walk away from this plumbing problem and just deal with slow draining sinks, a backed up utility tub and smelly pipes but the situation is not going to fix itself.  I’d be stuck in the same crummy situation.  I’ll come back to the problem but this time with a better tool.  A tool made for the job at hand.

I think that when I get frustrated that my life isn’t going exactly as I would like it to I need to step back and make sure I am using the right tool for the job.
