Wanderlust has been building up inside of me ever since I took my first trip overseas to Indonesia. To be able to experience the culture and people of another country, to explore lands that one has only dreamed of or read about in magazines is something everyone should experience. As a photographer I want to capture the experience in a still image, something that will spark an emotion in the viewer, something that will stir up some inner passion to travel and to experience the thrill for themselves.
What is it about travel that is so uplifting to the spirit? Maybe it is the excitement of being in a strange place or the giddy sense of fear of not knowing what to expect next. It could be the unfamiliar sights and sounds that at times overwhelm the senses leaving one with a feeling of vulnerability. Could it be the strange language that flutters around us like butterflies in the wind? I think it is all of this and so much more.
It’s the opportunity to connect with people who are different than us. It’s learning about things we had no idea existed. It’s viewing things from a different perspective. It’s realizing that people are not as different as we think.
I love this quote by Mark Twain: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
I’ve had the fortune of being able to see some beautiful parts of the world and I’ve got plans to see so much more of it. I’m looking forward to being able to share the experiences with you and to hopefully inspire you to give in to your own calling to wanderlust.
