April 22, 2010 – Happy Earth Day! But what is Earth Day and when did it start? Earth Day is a day that is supposed to inspire awareness and appreciation for our environment. It was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson back in 1970. Today it is about environmental education and action to change human behavior and spark policy changes.
To me Earth Day is a reminder that the way we treat our earth comes with repercussions. We cannot continue to take and take and take and not give back. Our natural resources are limited when consumed too quickly and without thought for the future. Our actions today doaffect our future and our children’s future. Believe it or not but what you do does have an affect throughout the world. We are all part of the web of life and that web extends across the globe.
It’s not easy to change. We all get comfortable with where we are at. Life becomes a routine. But if we are truly to protect and preserve our environment we are going to need to break the routine and implement change. We will need to break the cycle of consumerism and get smarter with our purchasing decisions. I wrote a bit earlier about buying local organic produce and local farm raised free range meat. There are so many changes we can implement in our lives that over time can really make a difference. Act locally, think globally. Recycle more. Consume less. Purchase from companies that are environmentally friendly. We can implement change through our purchasing power. It will take personal sacrifice to get back in sync with the earth. I think we all know what we need to do. We just need to do it more frequently and not as an after-thought.
So what does earth day mean to you?
